Landscaping Maintenance Tips
Turn to the experts at SMART if you need tips to maintain your landscape. We have over 30 years of combined experience in this industry. Our fall landscaping maintenance tips include:
- Cut off a third of your lawn when you mow
- Make sure each sprinkler head is reaching the other nearby heads for "head to head coverage" (You should have 3 heads covering the same area)
- Water lawns on slopes for small durations but several cycles (multiple start times)
- If you have dry spots in your lawn in May, June or July, your coverage needs improvement
- Water in the early mornings in the warmer temps, early afternoons in cooler weather, and water 2x month in winter
- Watch for grubs in your lawn in August or September
- Fertilize cool season grasses in early spring (February or March) late spring (April), early fall (September or October) and late fall (December)
- Prune roses to half their size at the end of March and prune a third off during fall or winter
- Prune perennials and flowering shrubs any time after freeze and through mid February (don't wait too late in early spring)
- Prune your trees in the winter!
- Refresh your gravel and pecan or wood mulch in fall and winter!
- Don't forget to water in winter (Water plants 1-2x month in the winter)
- Most xeric plants don't need fertilizing but may need micro nutrient supplements (such as Iron chlorosis)
